Carl D’Silva (1954–2015) was one of India’s most respected wildlife artists, best known for his detailed bird illustrations. Based in Goa, he worked closely with scientists and conservationists across the country, bringing the natural world to life through his art. Carl’s work appears in leading field guides including Birds of the Indian Subcontinent by Grimmett, Inskipp & Inskipp. His illustrations helped make wildlife more accessible to beginners and experts alike.

The gallery includes a curated selection of Carl’s bird illustrations, sketchbooks, and rarely seen drawings from his personal collection. The gallery gives glimpse into Carl's work as a Wildlife Illustrator.

About Carl D'silva

Carl D’Silva (1954–2015) was known for his precise, lifelike drawings that appeared in many of the country’s major field guides, including Birds of the Indian Subcontinent by Grimmett, Inskipp & Inskipp.

Carl lived in Goa but worked closely with ornithologists, researchers, and publishers across India. His work was built on careful observation—often done in the field—and a deep respect for the subjects he painted. Beyond birds, he also illustrated mammals, reptiles, and other wildlife, always with attention to detail and habitat.

Every year, GBCN hosts the Carl D’Silva Memorial Lecture to honour his legacy. The event brings together birdwatchers, artists, students, and nature lovers to celebrate Carl’s life, his love for wildlife, and his lasting contribution to conservation.
